Classroom Expectations
The following expectations will be expected in all classrooms at St. Rose of Lima School. Individual teachers may have additional rules/expectations for their own classrooms. The students have the responsibility to know the specific rules outlined in each classroom.
- Be prepared - It is each student’s responsibility to attend class with notebook, paper, pen/pencil, books and appropriate materials.
- Be punctual - Students will arrive on time to every class. On time means seated and ready to work when the class begins.
- Respect all people - Students will treat themselves, staff, teachers, and other students with respect. Disruptive behavior will not be acceptable.
- Respect property - Students will treat our facilities and other people’s property in a respectful manner.
Each classroom teacher will establish class rules and consequences for misbehavior within his/her classroom. Consequences will be sequential in nature; for example, warning, counseling of the student by the teacher, telephone call to parents, detention, etc.
ST. ROSE DISCIPLINE PLAN
The St. Rose staff has developed behavior guidelines that are mutually acceptable to the staff, students, and parents. The staff feels that these guidelines empower students with the skills necessary to make responsible choices and develop maturity in thinking judgment.
The school discipline process is divided into two sections. The first section, The St. Rose Pride Plan, helps the staff create a supportive environment which enables students to experience success and develop ownership for behavior guidelines. The second section, the 5 Step Plan for Change, helps the educator deal effectively with the student who is having difficulty following the rules.
ST. ROSE PRIDE PLAN
Students who demonstrate the ability to manage themselves according to our school rules will participate in goal line activities. We are committed to making St. Rose a positive place where students feel safe and have a sense of belonging.
- Each teacher keeps a record of student behavior which is evaluated at the end of pre-determined times (every few weeks). This record may be in the form of a check list or a management folder.
- Students who meet the grade level expectations will be eligible to participate in the goal line activities. Goal line activities may be in the form of special projects, games, treats, or events determined by the teacher.
- After each goal line activity, students have a new start towards the next goal line activity.
5-STEP PLAN FOR CHANGE
The St. Rose staff members work together to promote positive reinforcement of acceptable behavior. On the occasions when problems do arise, however, we feel that the students must accept the responsibility for their actions. This philosophy is consistent with the educational goals of the book, School Without Failure, by William Glasser.
Basic 5 – Step Plan for Changing Inappropriate Behavior
- WARNING
Staff member identifies the behavior and asks the student to stop.
*On certain behaviors, we reserve the right to skip step 1 or steps 1&2 (depends on severity of the behavior)
- THINKING SPOT
If the behavior continues after the WARNING, the student is sent to a specific site in the classroom to think over the problem and write their problem down in his/her management folder. When the staff member has a chance and the student has had time to think about the problem, the staff member will discuss the behavior with the student and gives them a verbal plan explaining how they will improve their behavior. - CLASSROOM PLACE
If the preceding steps do not change the behavior, the student will be directed to sit in the CLASSROOM PLACE. The student reflects on what happened and develops a written plan (commitment) for how he/she will improve the behavior. This written plan must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school the following day. If the signed plan is not returned the student will remain in the classroom place until the plan is returned. (If a child is in the classroom place for the day, that will include being in the place when going to specials outside the classroom like, P.E., Music, Technology, and Library.) - PLACE II
If the student is non-productive or disruptive in the CLASSROOM PLACE or the offense is such that a removal from the classroom setting is deemed necessary, he/she is sent to PLACE II. This is in another classroom and the student must follow the steps outlined in Step 3. The principal must approve of the written plan before the student may return to their own classroom place in order to solve the original problem that resulted in his/her being assigned to the Classroom Place. - SELF-EVLAUATION DAY
If all the steps 1-4 are unsuccessful in stopping the behavior, the student is sent home for the remainder of the day or all of the following day. The student is to use this time to evaluate his/her behavior, make a decision for positive change, and develop a written plan to the principal in order to return to school.
SPECIAL NOTE:
The first 4 steps are passed and a SELF-EVALUATION DAY or FORMAL SUSPENSION may occur in these situations**:
Disrespect to an adult Behavior that is disruptive to the educational process of child or students in the class
Vulgarity or profanity
Verbal abuse, threats, intimidation and or fighting
Malicious harassment including sexual and racial harassment
Theft
Vandalism
Threats or use of weapons or firearms
Gang related activities
**This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. There may be other serious behavior that will result in SELF-EVALUATION DAY or a FORMAL SUSPENSION.
ST. ROSE SCHOOL RULES
- GOAL STATEMENT
All staff will work cooperatively toward reinforcement of positive student behavior throughout St. Rose Elementary School. - ST. ROSE SCHOOL RULES
At St. Rose, the established rules fall under three headings:

C. Participation
*All students and parents need to be aware that the school is not (and cannot) be responsible for personal property that has been stolen. As such, all rules and expectations of conduct and discipline associated with St. Rose of Lima School proper will extend to all transportation providers’ vehicles and stop locations. At school or riding a bus to and from school you are still St. Rose of Lima students and are expected to conduct yourself accordingly.
- OTHER OFFENSES - Any other offense which in the judgment of the school staff is harmful to students, staff, or property, or which disrupts the educational process. Consequence step to be determined by the Principal.
*Special Privileges/Activities
The staff feels that co-curricular and extra-curricular activities should be an important part of every student’s education. The students also have a responsibility to earn the right to participate in special school related activities and events by demonstrating appropriate behavior. Special privilege activities and events include, but may not be limited to: field trips, assemblies, concerts, dances, parties, etc.
Behavior Contracts
In order to meet the special needs of specific students, individual behavior contracts may be used in conjunction with, or a replacement of, the discipline plan aforementioned. Special behavioral contracts will be written under the Principal’s discretion.
Suspension
A student suspended from school or classes has the responsibility to obtain assignments and make up any missed work. Students suspended out of school are not allowed on school grounds or at school related events or activities without the prior permission of the Principal. In-school suspension may also be signed by the Principal on a short term basis while students are on a “time-out” from class.
Dress Code
Learning to dress properly is part of the educational process. Students are required to wear school uniforms. A student’s dress has an effect on the school atmosphere, peer respect, attitude toward school and learning, and most importantly, the student’s own self-esteem. These policies and procedures have been implemented to provide a safe learning environment for all children attending St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. These policies may be modified as new un-anticipated circumstances are presented.
Special Note
In the interest of building a strong character in our students, promoting and maintaining a philosophy of modesty, we ask that parents make an effort to evaluate their own dress while on or near the school property, treating their own bodies with respect as they house our souls which belong to God. In 1 Cor 6 :19-20 we hear that our bodies are temples of the Holy Sprit and that we are to glorify God in them. Our teachers and staff will be appropriate role models for your children in this area.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Associated Student Body
All students enrolled at St. Rose of Lima are members of the Associated Student Body.
Associated Student Body Officers
The officers of the student body are: President, vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Each class will elect a class representative who shall be members of the Executive Council and will be responsible to represent and report student activities to their class.
Technology
St. Rose provides all students with relevant technological opportunities because technology has an ever-increasing and permanent role in society. Technology is a tool with inherent interdisciplinary nature. Since it is a basic life skill, it should be integrated into areas of the curriculum. There are ethical, social and legal issues in the use of technology. We, as Catholic school educators, believe that we must prepare students from an early age in the use of technology and provide them with an understanding of its concepts and responsibilities.
Access to telecommunications will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases and bulletin boards throughout the world. Internet is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Access to network services is provided to students who agree to act in a respectful and responsible manner. The following are not permitted:
- Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures
- Using obscene language
- Harassing, insulting, bullying or attacking others
- Damaging computers and computer systems
- Violating copyright laws
- Accessing materials that have not been designated for student use by an educator.
Access is a privilege, not a right. Access entails responsibility. Disciplinary or legal action will be taken against those who abuse this privilege.
We encourage our students to follow the “Rules for Online Safety” that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has set forth for both parents and their children to adopt. The child agrees to do the following:
-
I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents’ permission.
-
I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information on the web that makes me feel uncomfortable
-
I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
-
I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
-
I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault I get a message like that. If I do, I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the online service.
-
I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of the day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and the appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.
Computer Usage
The use of computers at St. Rose School is a privilege and carries with it the responsibility for appropriate use. Students who do not comply with usage rules will forfeit their usage privileges. All students/parents in Grades K-6 must sign a computer usage agreement form on/by September 30th. Completed forms are kept on file.
